How to calculate upload time
The basic formula is:
Upload time in seconds = file size in bits ÷ upload speed in bits per second
Internet speeds are normally displayed in megabits per second, or Mbps. File sizes are normally displayed in megabytes, gigabytes or terabytes.
Because one byte contains eight bits, the file size must be multiplied by eight before it can be compared with an internet speed measured in bits. NIST defines a byte as a sequence of eight bits.
For decimal gigabytes, a convenient formula is:
Upload time in seconds = file size in GB × 8,000 ÷ upload speed in Mbps
Example: Uploading 100GB at 100 Mbps
- Convert 100GB to megabits:
100 × 8,000 = 800,000 megabits. - Divide by the upload speed:

Why your real upload takes longer than the table
The table assumes your connection sends data continuously at its stated speed. Real networks rarely maintain perfect line-rate performance throughout a huge transfer.
Your plan speed is not your current speed
An internet package may advertise a maximum speed, but your current result can change with network demand, signal quality and local congestion.
Always use the upload result from a speed test. A download result of 500 Mbps does not mean your upload speed is also 500 Mbps.
Wi-Fi can become the bottleneck
